Bowling Club History - Balgowlah Bowling Club

Welcome to the historical journey of the Balgowlah Bowling Club, also known as 'The Bally.' Our club has been a cherished part of the community since its inception and continues to be a vibrant hub for bowling enthusiasts and community members alike.

Beginnings

The Balgowlah Bowling Club was founded following a public meeting on September 26, 1951, convened by then Mayor of Manly, James Anderson. This meeting, attended by 188 community members, set in motion the establishment of a club that would become a cornerstone of the local community. The location for the club was eventually decided upon at a subsequent meeting with the vision and dedication of several community associations and members, leading to the official incorporation of the club on March 11, 1955.

Development and Growth

Construction on the original site began in March 1954, with significant community involvement and investment through debentures. The club officially opened its doors with its first green in April 1955, and the clubhouse followed shortly, inaugurated by the Governor of New South Wales, Sir John Northcott, on June 2, 1956. Over the years, additional facilities were added, including two more greens and the completion of the clubhouse in 1960.

Community and Celebrations

The club has not only been a place for sporting excellence but also a hub for community activities. It hosted numerous social events, community gatherings, and was a meeting place that fostered friendship and camaraderie among its members. The club celebrated significant milestones including its 25th and 50th anniversaries with events that brought together both past and present members, highlighting the club's enduring legacy and its role within the community.
